MEET THE WINNERS: 2020

The Art and Olfaction Awards are proud to present the winners for the 7th annual awards.

September 17, 2020

LOS ANGELES and ONLINE — Guests and nominees gathered in a virtual ceremony to celebrate the finalists and winners of the 7th annual Art and Olfaction Awards. True to our times, the ceremony took place over Zoom, postponed from its May event due to safety concerns around Coronavirus. Like all Zoom events, the awards were virtual yet  intimate, with people joining in from their homes around the world .

Since the program’s inception in 2014 by The Institute for Art and Olfaction, The Art and Olfaction Awards have become a prestigious celebration of excellence in independent perfumery. Designed to raise public interest and awareness around new practices in independent and artisan perfumery, the Art and Olfaction Awards’ Golden Pear statuette is handed out to outstanding creators in the categories of independent, artisan, handmade and experimental perfume at its yearly celebrations.

The winners this year were, in the artisan category, Bonsai by House of Matriarch (Perfumer: Christi Meshell) and Nimbis by Parallax Olfactory (Perfumer: Linda Sivrican); in the independent category, Young Hearts by Bruno Acampora Profumi (Perfumer: Miguel Matos) and PostHume by Son Venïn (Perfumer: Rosine Courage) and the Sadakichi Award, Jónsi: Í blóma (In bloom), Hvítblinda (Whiteout), Svartalda (Dark wave) by Jónsi Birgisson (Perfumer: Jónsi Birgisson). In the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume, the winner was Rasa, by Pomare’s Stolen Perfume (perfumer: Rachel Binder)

An international group of judges, board members and past winners presented at the 7th annual Art and Olfaction Awards. The event started with a welcome from the board of directors, delivered by Rubia Chaudri and Jeffrey Paul. Board members Ashley Eden Kessler and Daniel Krasofski wew joined by judge Deji Bryce Olukotun to explain the ethics and technicalities of the judging process.

In the independent category, judge Mark Behnke, and board members Sarah Horowitz-Thran and Julianne Lee presented the finalists and announced the winners, followed by judge Marta Siembab, 2019 winner Ryan Richmond (‘Rich Mess’) and judge Anahita Mekanik presenting the finalists and winners in the artisan category.

Mandy Aftel and Miss Layla presented the winner in the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume in an emotional moment, followed by judges Simon Niedenthal and Darin Klein to present the winner in the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent.

IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown closed out the event with a talk that reflected the importance of banding together in uncertain times, ending the event on a positive note.

I want to remind everyone that great good is coming to the perfume community” she said.

This is happening because we are increasingly listening to and supporting the agents of positive change in our community. This continues every time we put aside anger, jealousy and fear to help someone with a decision, to share their good news, to give the moral support we all need. We are creating, in fits and starts, a small model for kindness and community in our difficult, angry society.”

The event was energetically emceed by board member Kendra Gaeta, with music composed and performed for the winners by board member Maxwell Williams (listen to it here).

The event ended with an impromptu dance party, where past winners, partners, friends, finalists all came together to dance, virtually, across the world.

As with past years, our panel of esteemed judges includes luminaries from the perfume and art worlds. This year’s jury included Anahita Mekanik, Andreas Wilhelm, Ashley Eden Kessler, Bibiana Prival, Dana El Masri, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Eddie Bulliqi, Frederic Jacques, Mark Behnke, Marta Siembab, Sherri Sebastian, Yosh Han. Together, these judges blindly selected the finalists and the winners in the artisan and independent categories. The Sadakichi Award was juried by Anna Gerber, Darin Klein, Deji Bryce Olukotun, Peter de Cupere, and Simon Niedenthal. The Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume was selected in a separate blind judging process by Mandy Aftel, Jana Blankenship, and Jane Larkworthy.

Judging took place in late 2019 and early 2020, and was - as always – blind in the artisan and independent categories, as well as the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume. Submissions were identified by a number, and accompanied only by an anonymized creative brief. Judges assessed a randomized set of vials based on creative and technical achievement, creating a score that combined with the other judges’ scores to give the overall ranking for each submission.

###

The Art and Olfaction Awards was founded in 2013 as an independent awards mechanism designed to celebrate innovation and excellence in artisan and independent perfume, and experimentation work with scent. The Art and Olfaction Awards are a program of The Institute for Art and Olfaction.

The Institute for Art and Olfaction is a 501(c)3 non-profit based in Los Angeles, CA. The Institute for Art and Olfaction advances public and artistic engagement with scent. We do this by initiating and supporting arts projects that utilize the medium of scent, by providing accessible and affordable education in our experimental laboratory as well as in partnership with institutions and community groups, and by celebrating excellence in independent and artisan perfumery through our yearly award mechanism, The Art and Olfaction Awards. Through these efforts, we extend the world of scent beyond its traditional boundaries of appreciation and use.
