Announcing the 2023 Finalists

The Institute for Art and Olfaction celebrates the finalists of the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards. The finalists were shared at a special announcement at Esxence in Milan.

March 31, 2023, Milan - The Institute for Art and Olfaction is proud to announce the finalists for the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards. Launched in 2014, the Art and Olfaction Awards have become a highly distinguished recognition of excellence in the field of independent perfumery. This event aims to promote public interest and awareness of the latest developments in perfume, and recognizes outstanding creators in the Independent, Artisan, and Experimental perfume categories. The awards acknowledge a diverse range of styles and techniques, honoring creators from various backgrounds and perspectives.

The Art and Olfaction Awards' Golden Pear statuette is presented annually to eight deserving recipients at events held in different cities across the globe. Through this recognition, the organization has helped to foster innovation and creativity in the art of perfumery, while inspiring a new generation of independent perfumers. Cemented by its the three juried categories (artisan category, independent category, and the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent), awards are also given in three discretionary categories: The Contribution to Scent Culture Award, The Septimus Piesse Award for Exceptional Vison, and the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume.

The announcement of the winners will take place in our annual public ceremony. This year we return to Los Angeles, hosting the awards at the stunning art deco Cicada Club on May 11, 2023 during SCENT WEEK Los Angeles.

As with past years, our panel of esteemed judges was made up of important and objective voices from the perfume and art worlds. This year’s jury included Ashley Eden Kessler, Jeffrey Paul, Julianne Lee, Maxwell Williams, Rubia Chaudri, Sarah Horowitz-Thran, Spyros Drosopoulos, Chi Wai Tang, Dana El Masri, Daniel Krasofski, Ida Meister, John Biebel, Lakenda Wallace, and Minetta Rogers. Together, these judges blindly selected the finalists and the winners in the artisan and independent categories. The Sadakichi Award was juried by Darin Klein, Kaya Sorhaindo, Klara Ravat, and Simon Niedenthal. The Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume was selected in a separate blind judging process by Jean Godfrey June, Jessica Matlin, and Mandy Aftel.

It gives us great pleasure to announce the finalists for the 9th awards. Please join us in congratulating these outstanding creators.
