OUR HISTORY

The Art and Olfaction Awards were founded as a program of the Institute for Art and Olfaction in 2013, on a suggestion from perfumer Bruno Fazzolari.

2014
Our first awards ceremony took place in April, 2014 at Goethe Institut Los Angeles, with the support of Luckyscent / Scent Bar. For our first event, we celebrated artisan and independent perfumery, with two categories: the Art and Olfaction Artisan Award, and the Art and Olfaction Independent Award.

2015
In 2015, we expanded our two award categories by adding The Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent, created to highlight scent-related work being done in the context of other creative practices. This experimental award joined our artisan and independent awards to create a broad snapshot of the diversity, excellence and potential in the field. 2015 also marked the beginning of our partnership with Esxence, in Milan. As part of our collaboration with Esxence, we announce the finalists in a special yearly event at the conference. The awards event was held in April, 2015, at Goethe Institut in Los Angeles.

2016
We held the third annual Art and Olfaction Awards at Hammer Museum as part of their public programming in May 2016. The expanded event was hosted by Zackary Drucker, and was free, open to the public, and packed with 250+ attendees. The event was also supported by a three day scent fair, produced by Hammer Museum, The Institute for Art and Olfaction and Luckyscent / Scent Bar.

2017
In 2017, in an effort to better reach the international community that we serve, we decided to host the fourth annual Art and Olfaction Awards in Europe. We announced the finalists at Esxence in Milan in March, 2017, and held the award ceremony itself in Berlin in May, 2017. We also introduced a new award: The Contribution to Scent Culture Award. We also introduced a new program that we produce alongside the awards, in collaboration with Klara Ravat from Smell Lab Berlin: The Experimental Scent Summit.

2018
In 2018, we hosted our fifth annual awards event at The Tabernacle in London, after announcing the finalists at Esxence. At the fifth annual awards, we presented the first Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume, an award designed to celebrate the work being done by small perfume brands whose owner / perfumer has a hand in every step of the perfume creation process.

2019
We hosted the 6th annual awards in Amsterdam, in May 2019, at the stunning Oude Kerk, in central Amsterdam. We hosted our Experimental Scent Summit at NDSM Fuse, in North Amsterdam.

2020
In 2020, we moved our 7th awards to an online format when Covid rendered in-person events impossible, and our 7th awards took place on Zoom, which was more fun than we thought it would be thanks to a virtual dance-off and the music composed by Eau (Maxwell Williams).

2022
Because Covid made it so difficult to ship, gather, and party, we skipped 2021 and helpd our 8th awards in July 2022 in Miami, at the World Perfumery Congress. There, we joined the American Society of Perfumers to celebrate perfumery on all levels of creativity and practice.

2023
For the the 9th edition of the Art and Olfaction Awards, we returned to the city where it all began, and enjoyed a hometown crowd in Los Angeles. We were so thrilled to be home, we decided to program ten days of events around the world - the first edition of Scent Week (postponed from 2020). The awards were held on May 11, at the historic Art Deco Cicada Club, in downtown LA.

2024
For the 10th edition of the Art and Olfaction Awards, we return to Europe and host them in the beautiful city of Lisbon, in Portugal. We host the 5th Experimental Scent Summit, alongside the awards, and it all takes place June 6 and 7.

The Art and Olfaction Awards are designed to celebrate the work done by artisan perfumers, independent perfume houses, and creative practitioners working with scent in the context of arts or experimental practices. Our goal is to be a fair and impartial mechanism for recognizing excellence. We aim to accomplish by implementing and improving upon existing awards structures. These include:

    •    Blind, multiple-phase judging
    •    Clear and public judging parameters
    •    Affordable submission fees
    •    Public announcement of the finalists and winners
    •    A panel of judges that reflects a diversity of fields, interests and backgrounds
